March has me thinking about rainbows. And gold. And leprechauns, obviously.
But mostly? It has me thinking about one of my favourite nutrition conversations: the power of a colourful plate. Because here's the thing - most of us know we should be eating more colour. The gap isn't information. It's actually doing it, consistently, without it becoming a second job.
The good news? That's exactly what this post (and quite frankly, my meal plan) is designed to help you with.
Why should you care? Eating a wide variety of foods supports your gut microbiome, delivers a broader range of vitamins and minerals, and keeps your body functioning at its best. Eating the same nutritious breakfast every day isn't bad - but over time, it limits the diversity of nutrients your body gets.

Research suggests aiming for 30 different plant foods per week in your diet. This week's Fraîche Table menu includes 34.
Fraîche Table does all the thinking for you - thoughtfully balanced meals, built with variety in mind. Try it out for free - you don’t have to do it all alone.
I wrote this as a quick way for you to learn what each colour in your produce drawer is actually doing for your body. Those gorgeous colours in fruits and vegetables aren't just for looks. They come from natural plant compounds called phytonutrients, and each colour brings something different to the table. Pretty cool, right?
Let's take a tour through the rainbow.

❤️ Red Foods: Heart & Inflammation Support
Red fruits and vegetables are rich in compounds like lycopene and anthocyanins, known for supporting heart health, reducing the risk of prostate cancer (lycopene) and helping reduce inflammation.
Think: tomatoes, strawberries, cherries, red peppers, watermelon, raspberries.
Fraîche Tip: Tomatoes are particularly rich in lycopene, and cooking them with a bit of healthy fat like olive oil (hello, sauces and soups) actually helps your body absorb this nutrient even better. Try out the Classic Spaghetti & Meatballs to get a healthy dose!
🧡 Orange Foods: Immunity & Skin Health
Orange foods are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, a nutrient that plays an important role in immune health, eye health, and healthy skin. They're also naturally high in fibre, which supports digestion and keeps you feeling satisfied after meals.
Think: carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin, oranges, mango.
The Chicken & Mango Rainbow Salad puts mango front and centre; it's a stunning recipe to work into your regular rotation (one of my favs).

💛 Yellow Foods: Energy & Cell Protection
Yellow foods earn their colour from a family of antioxidants called carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin, which are particularly important for eye health and protecting against age-related vision changes.
Yellow bell peppers are also one of the highest vitamin C foods you can eat, gram for gram outpacing oranges, which matters for immune function, collagen production, and iron absorption.
Bananas bring potassium and B6 to the table, both of which play a role in energy metabolism and nervous system function.
Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that supports digestion and helps reduce inflammation.
Think: yellow bell peppers, pineapple, corn, winter squash, bananas.
The Rainbow Veggie Macaroni Salad is a crowd favourite - and that yellow bell pepper adds just the right amount of sweetness.
💚 Green Foods: The Nutritional Powerhouses
If there's one colour to prioritize, green is a pretty great (and obvious) place to start. Green foods are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, rich in folate, vitamin K, iron, calcium, and chlorophyll, all of which support energy production, bone health, and the body's natural detoxification pathways. Fantastic for gut health, too.
Think: spinach, kale, broccoli, zucchini, avocado, Brussels sprouts.
The Creamy Green Soup is as nourishing and vibrant as it gets.

💜 Blue & Purple Foods: Brain & Longevity Support
Blue and purple foods contain anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants linked to brain health, memory support, and healthy aging.
Think: blueberries, beets, purple cabbage, eggplant, purple sweet potatoes, plums.
A note on beets: Beets deserve a special mention for heart health. They're rich in dietary nitrates, which the body converts to nitric oxide, a compound that helps relax and dilate blood vessels, supporting healthy blood pressure and circulation.
Research has also linked regular beet consumption to improved exercise endurance and cardiovascular efficiency, making them one of the more underrated foods for long-term heart health.
Beet lover? The Rainbow Roasted Veggie Sandwich in the Fraîche Table library is a must. Colourful, nourishing, and honestly one of the prettiest plates in the recipe collection.
🤍 White & Beige Foods: The Quiet Heroes
These ones often get overlooked, but they rightfully deserve a seat at the table. White and beige foods contain compounds that support immune function and heart health in their own quiet, powerful way.
Cauliflower is a standout here as a cruciferous vegetable, a family that also includes broccoli and cabbage, and this group has been studied extensively for their cancer-protective potential. They contain compounds that support the body's detoxification pathways and help regulate healthy cell growth. Aim for at least one cruciferous vegetable a day if you can.
Think: garlic, onions, mushrooms, cauliflower, leeks.
Fraîche tip: Garlic and onions contain sulfur compounds that support the immune system and may help reduce inflammation. Don't skip them!
The Cauliflower Not-chos in Fraîche Table are a staple - who said getting your veggies in can’t be fun?

The Real Goal: Variety Over Perfection
Eating the rainbow doesn't mean every plate needs six different colours. Think variety over the course of your week, not perfection at every meal.
A handful of berries at breakfast. Leafy greens at lunch. Roasted vegetables at dinner. Small, consistent additions that naturally build a more colourful plate and a wider spectrum of nutrients, without complicated rules.
This is exactly what a Fraîche Table membership is designed to do. Every week, your meal plan is built with variety in mind by a dietitian (me!), so you're naturally hitting different colours, different nutrients, and different flavour profiles without having to think about it. The planning is already done. You just cook. How easy is that? Click here to start your free trial. Your body is already saying 'thank you'.
The Bottom Line
The rainbow isn't just a pretty idea. It's one of the simplest, most practical tools you have for making sure your body gets what it needs to feel and function at its best.
And the easiest way to actually eat it? Stop relying on willpower and start with a plan that builds it in for you.
Explore Fraîche Table memberships starting at $14.99/month - less than one takeout meal, and a whole lot more satisfying.
